Four AI Models Down Simultaneously, Fixed Within 30 Minutes

3 min read

Thursday morning turned into a bad one for anyone relying on AI chatbots to get work done. Within roughly ninety minutes, four of the industry's biggest players, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google, all logged service problems that overlapped in a way rarely seen across the sector. Anthropic's status page flagged trouble first, at 9:23 am Eastern, citing elevated errors on several Claude models.

OpenAI followed at 10:43 am with reports of degraded performance across ChatGPT and Codex. xAI's Grok ran into its own issues around the same window, with user complaints on DownDetector spiking from single digits to over 1,300 in under an hour.

The timing raised an obvious question: why would competing companies, running separate infrastructure on separate cloud providers, hit trouble at nearly the same moment? None of the four have offered a joint explanation, and each company's incident reports describe the problems in isolation, with their own timestamps, their own causes, and their own fixes. What's clear is how fast the recoveries came.

Anthropic and OpenAI both had their issues resolved within a couple of hours. Grok's status, as of this writing, remains less certain.

Cloud-based AI models operated by OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google suffered a rare and overlapping set of significant service interruptions over a period of hours Thursday morning.

Why this matters

Four separate companies, four separate infrastructure stacks, all wobbling within the same few hours. That's not a coincidence worth shrugging off. Anthropic alone filed multiple incident reports Thursday morning, covering Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5, and a distinct Sonnet 5 error, with resolution stretching to 12:16 pm.

If you're building a product on any single model provider, this is your reminder that "the cloud" is still a handful of data centers and dependency chains that can hiccup at the same time for reasons nobody's fully explained yet. Thirty minutes of downtime sounds trivial until it's your checkout flow, your support bot, or your research pipeline stalling during business hours. Founders who assumed multi-vendor redundancy would insulate them from exactly this kind of event got a data point suggesting otherwise.

Anthropic's public incident logs deserve credit for transparency, timestamps and all, but transparency after the fact doesn't help the developer whose app silently failed at 9:23 am. Worth watching whether OpenAI, xAI, and Google publish comparably detailed postmortems, and whether anyone connects the dots on a shared root cause.
