At CES, Amazon made it official: Alexa+ is now available to all users. But the real twist isn’t just the smart speaker upgrade, it’s that you can summon Alexa right inside your browser via Alexa.com. That’s a direct shot at ChatGPT, offering a single AI assistant across smart home, apps, and web.
For Prime members, it’s free, which beats paying extra for a separate chatbot. Yet capability lags behind the competition. Alexa+ still hasn’t reached its intended form.
The question is whether that convenience will matter before the next big leap arrives.
(More on that below.) Part of the news announced at CES was that Alexa+ will also be widely available on Alexa.com if you want Alexa's help while you're using your browser. This is more of a move to compete with ChatGPT than it is something to help your day-to-day use of Alexa, but I guess it's nice if you're looking for a single AI service to use across smart home devices, apps, and the browser. Also, this cross-platform Alexa access is free if you have Prime, versus paying an additional fee for something like ChatGPT, but Amazon's assistant has yet to reach its full intended form and is not as capable as the competition right now.
Amazon’s gambit is clear: embed Alexa+ into every corner of your digital life, from the smart speaker on your counter to the browser tab you’re reading right now. The price is right for Prime members, free beats a subscription every time. But free only matters if the product delivers.
Today, Alexa+ lags behind its rivals in raw reasoning and conversational depth. That gap may shrink, or it may widen. For now, the smart home loyalist gets a decent upgrade at no extra cost, while the power user who wants a true ChatGPT competitor will keep two tabs open.
Convenience has a ceiling, and capability is the key. Amazon is betting you’ll stay because it’s easy. But in the AI race, easy rarely wins alone.
