Microsoft is putting an AI inside your Xbox so you never have to read another fan wiki again.
Its Copilot assistant, which has been poking around on mobile apps and Windows PCs for months, is finally being installed directly into the current generation of Xbox consoles this year. You talk to it. It’s supposed to figure out what game you’re playing and what you need.
Stuck on a boss? Ask for a strategy. Can’t remember the recipe for a Netherite sword?
It knows. It can also scan your own play history to suggest what you should tackle next. Microsoft hasn’t specified model numbers, but the obvious candidates are the Series X and Series S sitting under TVs right now.
Microsoft has been working on its gaming-focused Copilot assistant for months now, with the company launching it in beta on the Xbox mobile app, Windows 11, and Xbox Ally handhelds. Players can use their voice to call upon the Gaming Copilot if they get stuck in a game, and the AI assistant is supposed to reply with suggestions about what to do next. It can also answer questions about a player's gaming history, offer up tips or strategies, and provide game recommendations.
In examples shared by Xbox, players can ask Gaming Copilot how to beat a particular boss or which materials they need to craft a sword in Minecraft. Though Yadav didn't confirm which consoles that Copilot is coming to, the company's current lineup includes the Xbox Series X | S.
The goal is to kill the second screen. The phone with the walkthrough, the laptop open to a forum thread. By wiring the assistant into the console itself, Microsoft makes help a voice command away.
No pausing, no searching. Just ask.
This convenience is also a form of lock-in. A useful AI that knows your habits becomes a reason to stay in the ecosystem. Why switch platforms if your digital coach knows you prefer stealth archers and has the perfect next game queued up?
It turns the console from a piece of hardware into something that feels, vaguely, like a companion. Or at least a very knowledgeable butler. The success of this depends entirely on the AI not being stupid.
If it mishears commands or delivers generic advice, players will just go back to their phones. Microsoft’s bet is that they won’t have to.
