Yelp Expands AI Chatbot to New Universal Assistant Tab
Yelp wants to be the first thing you open when you need something done in the real world. Its plan is a chatbot that does the booking, ordering, and scheduling for you. Today, that plan gets a lot bigger.
The company is moving its AI Assistant from a quiet corner of its app into a primary tab that covers everything on the platform. What began last year as a tool for finding a plumber now tries to handle your lunch order, your doctor's appointment, and your car repair estimate. It connects to DoorDash, Vagaro, Zocdoc, and others.
Craig Saldanha, Yelp’s chief product officer, labeled this the company's most significant AI product evolution. He is probably right.
The bot will be available through a new "Assistant" tab spanning every category on Yelp, a significant expansion from its 2024 debut as a tool for hiring service professionals. Yelp is also broadening Assistant's reach with a set of app integrations that let users order takeout or delivery through DoorDash, Grubhub, and other delivery services, request quotes from professionals in the area like auto and pet care, and book appointments with beauty, wellness, fitness, and healthcare providers through Vagaro and Zocdoc. Support for Yelp Waitlist is "coming soon," as is Calendly integration for scheduling appointments. Craig Saldanha, Yelp's chief product officer, described the update as the company's "most significant AI product evolution yet," adding that it is "only the beginning of a more conversational, personalized and action-oriented Yelp experience."
This is a shift from looking things up to getting things done. Yelp’s bet is that a single chat window can become the control panel for local life. If it works, the app morphs from a passive directory into an active agent.
The announced integrations with Waitlist and Calendly suggest they are serious about covering the full journey from search to service. But utility is one thing. Habit is another.
The real test is whether people will trust a bot to manage the logistics of their day. Saldanha says this is just the beginning. The beginning now looks like a full-scale invasion.
