OpenAI Codex records a task and repeats it, unavailable in EU, UK, Switzerland

OpenAI has added a feature called Record & Replay to its Codex app for macOS. The idea is simple: you walk the AI through a task once—say, uploading a YouTube video, filling in metadata, attaching a thumbnail and generating subtitles—then Codex saves that sequence as a reusable “skill.” After that, the agent can repeat the workflow on its own, without further prompting. The tool only works when Computer Use is enabled, a setting that has been available in the EU since June 16, but the Record & Replay capability itself remains blocked in the EU, the UK and Switzerland.

Version 26.616 also brings bulk actions for the Automations history and lets users hand off threads between a local machine and a remote host, keeping tasks alive across devices. Codex positions itself as an AI assistant for coding and other white‑collar automation, and while the app is free to download, full functionality requires a paid ChatGPT subscription. The rollout hints at a more hands‑off approach to routine digital chores, yet geographic restrictions keep many potential users out for now.

Codex turns that recording into a reusable "skill" and can then repeat the process on its own. The feature isn't available yet in the EU, the UK, or Switzerland, and it requires Computer Use to be turned on. Computer Use has been available in the EU since June 16.

Also new in version 26.616: bulk actions for the Automations history, plus the ability to hand off threads between a local and remote host to continue tasks on a connected machine. Codex is OpenAI's AI agent for coding and white-collar-work automation.

Why this matters

We can now ask Codex to observe a single task and replay it indefinitely, a capability that could streamline repetitive media workflows for developers building content pipelines. A curious development. The Record & Replay feature, bundled with the macOS Codex app, turns a user‑guided session into a reusable “skill,” then executes it without further input.

Because it hinges on the Computer Use setting, users must enable that permission first; the option has been available in the EU since June 16, yet the replay function itself is still blocked in the EU, the UK and Switzerland. This geographic restriction limits early adoption among a sizable developer base. For founders eyeing automation, the promise is clear, but it remains uncertain whether the tool will integrate smoothly with existing pipelines or how it will handle edge cases.

Researchers may find a testbed for studying human‑AI task transfer, though the closed‑platform nature curtails broader experimentation. In short, the feature is a concrete step toward persistent AI assistants, yet its practical impact is still to be demonstrated.
