Nvidia to Acquire AI Startup Hugging Face for USD 13 Billion
Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, taking control of the platform that has become the default home for open-source AI models and datasets. The deal marks a sharp jump from Hugging Face's last valuation of $4.5 billion in 2023, a mark it hit just two years ago.
Founded in 2016, Hugging Face built its reputation as a kind of GitHub for machine learning, a place where developers post models, share training data, and borrow from each other's work. That community-first structure turned it into infrastructure for the wider AI field, used by researchers and startups who wanted access to models without building everything from scratch.
The acquisition talk didn't come out of nowhere. Business Insider reported on August 23rd that Hugging Face was already working with a bank to weigh a sale in the $13 billion range, and by August 27th the outlet had confirmed Nvidia was in direct talks with the startup. Now that the numbers are official, the bigger question is what Nvidia plans to do with a platform built on openness once it owns it outright.
Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, bringing one of the most popular hosting platforms for open-source AI models, datasets, and tools under the ownership of the world’s biggest AI chipmaker.
Why this matters
A nearly threefold jump from Hugging Face's 2023 valuation to almost $13 billion tells us how much strategic weight Nvidia places on owning the place where most open-source AI actually gets built and shared. For developers and researchers who rely on the platform daily, the promise that "Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face" is the line worth watching closest, because it's the one Nvidia will have to keep proving true, deal after deal, model after model. Ownership changes incentives even when policies don't change on paper.
Founders building on Hugging Face's hub now have a chipmaker with obvious interest in steering workloads toward its own hardware sitting at the table. The leak-to-close timeline, from Business Insider's August 23rd report to a signed $12.93 billion agreement, also shows how fast these deals move once bankers get involved. We'd treat this as the moment open-source AI's most neutral-seeming infrastructure stopped being neutral by default and started needing to earn that trust under new ownership.
