Nscale Buys Anyscale for $1.65B in AI Compute Bet

Nscale is paying $1.65 billion for Anyscale, according to a Bloomberg report citing an anonymous source, in a move that pulls the British AI neocloud further up the compute stack it's trying to own outright. Anyscale grew out of the team behind Ray, the open source Python framework for distributed computing, and originally built a platform for running compute-heavy projects. That changed after GPT-3 landed in 2022 and pushed large language models into the mainstream. Anyscale pivoted toward scaling services for training and serving LLMs, along with data curation, inferencing, and reinforcement learning, all built on top of Ray's developer tools and orchestration layer.

For Nscale, the acquisition slots into a broader pattern. The company already runs business lines in energy, data centers, and orchestration software. Buying Anyscale adds workload management and scaling to that list, giving Nscale another layer of the AI infrastructure it can sell directly to customers rather than ceding to a partner. The deal follows a $2 billion Series C round in March that valued Nscale at $14.6 billion, with backers including Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell, and Aker.
