He added that India's supercomputing footprint was expanding steadily.

"With 37 supercomputers already installed across institutions nationwide and more in the pipeline, including the largest system planned for Bengaluru, these efforts are strengthening India's research and innovation ecosystem," Krishnan said.

The interesting part isn't the hardware. It's the constraints. Director V Kamakoti told students to think about power consumption and sharing.

This is the real job. Supercomputers are monstrously expensive to feed. Using them wisely, making different departments collaborate on the same machine, is a harder problem than building them.

India now has 37 of these systems. Another, bigger one, is coming to Bengaluru. The infrastructure is being laid.
