Indonesia's First University AI Center Opens at UGM

Yogyakarta got a new building block in Indonesia's AI ambitions this week. Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and NVIDIA opened the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center, the first AI research hub housed inside an Indonesian university. The launch happened under the government's AI Center of Excellence initiative, run through the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, known locally as Komdigi.

The setup pairs a public university with a telecom operator and a chipmaker, an arrangement meant to move AI development out of government offices and into classrooms and labs. UGM researchers and students get access to NVIDIA's computing stack alongside GPU Merdeka, Indosat's sovereign GPU-as-a-service platform built to keep processing power inside the country rather than routed through foreign cloud providers.

The center's stated job is narrow but ambitious: train Indonesian AI talent and build systems aimed at problems specific to the country, not just import models built elsewhere. Officials from Komdigi and UGM both spoke at the launch about what they see as the stakes of that distinction.
