Since August 2, 2026, every piece of content Claude generates carries a mark. Anthropic confirmed the change applies across Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, Tag, the API, and all three cloud platforms the company supports. Text gets a hidden watermark.
Files get a signature instead. Essays, code, images: all of it comes out tagged now, whether the request came from a browser tab or a script running through the API.
The trigger is Article 50 of the EU AI Act, which took effect that same day. Anthropic signed onto the bloc's Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, agreeing to act as both a model provider and a system provider under the rule. Models launched in the EU from August 2 onward ship with the marking built in from day one. Older models get a transition window rather than an instant switch, but Anthropic says every model it offers is moving toward the same standard eventually.
The rollout isn't confined to Europe, either. Anthropic built the compliance framework around EU law, but the marking travels with the models wherever they run. That raises a practical question: how does a watermark hide inside a sentence without changing what it says?
Why this matters For developers pulling Claude output into production code or client-facing text, this changes the calculus a bit. A hidden token-selection watermark doesn't alter what you read, but it does mean every essay, script, or file your team ships now carries an invisible fingerprint tied back to Anthropic's models. That's useful if you need to prove content is AI-generated for compliance reasons under the EU AI Act, less useful if you're building tools where indistinguishability from human writing actually matters to your users.
We'd push back a little on how "hidden" this really is in practice: watermarks that work by picking between semantically identical phrasings are only as durable as the next round of paraphrasing tools. Founders building on Claude should ask Anthropic directly how detection works and who can run it, because "traceable" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Worth watching: whether other major labs follow with their own watermarking schemes, and whether a common detection standard emerges or everyone ends up with incompatible, proprietary marks.
