Anthropic rolled out two new tools inside Claude on Wednesday: Docs and Slides, both in beta. The features let users generate documents and presentations directly from a chat, then export, edit, or share them the way they would a Google Doc. Ask Claude to draft a report or build a slide deck, and it hands back something you can revise through more prompts or by hand, with collaborators able to edit at the same time and leave comments in the margins.

The bigger change sits underneath those tools. Anthropic is folding its separate Cowork and Design modes into what it's calling "one Claude," so the productivity features that used to live in their own tabs now show up in any conversation. No more switching contexts to get access to skills or connectors already tied to your account. Artifacts, a feature for generating and previewing content like code or web pages, gets rolled into the same unified interface too.

The move lands Claude squarely in territory Google has held with Docs and Slides for years, and puts Anthropic's productivity push on more equal footing with what Gemini already offers inside Workspace.

Google spent years building Docs and Slides into a moat, then handed Gemini the keys to that moat from inside Workspace. Anthropic doesn't have that distribution, so it's building the equivalent inside Claude itself and betting people will do their document work in a chat window instead of a Google tab. That's a real behavioral ask, not a small one.

The bigger tell here is the "one Claude" merge. Folding Cowork, Artifacts, and Claude Design into a single interface suggests Anthropic thinks feature-fragmentation was costing it users, not attracting them. For developers and founders building on Claude's API, that consolidation matters more than the Docs and Slides launch itself: it signals where Anthropic wants the platform's center of gravity to sit, and it's chat, not a scattered set of sub-products.

We'd watch adoption closely rather than take the pitch at face value. Export and sharing features are table stakes; the real question is whether teams actually route document creation through an AI chat instead of falling back to Google the moment collaboration gets messy.
