Tamil Nadu wants to build its own AI island. The state government has committed 10,000 crore rupees to create a so-called Sovereign AI Park, a single district designed to contain every link in the artificial intelligence chain.

This is about control, not just computation. The term "sovereign" is doing heavy work. It signals a move away from renting intelligence from global tech giants whose servers and rules lie elsewhere.
The governance institute is the clearest expression of that. Its success would be measured not in patents but in functioning, auditable systems for the state's own use. A thousand jobs is a decent political win.
Building a functional, closed-loop AI ecosystem from scratch is the real gamble. It is an attempt to write the rules locally, for a technology that has so far been defined everywhere else.
