PhonePe has a hundred and fifty million monthly users. Now it wants to sell them OpenAI's chatbot.

The digital payments giant has signed a deal with the AI company. The goal is to pipe ChatGPT directly into its mobile app, putting the tool in front of a massive Indian audience. This is less a technical experiment and more a distribution play.

OpenAI recently announced that users in India will receive one year of free access to ChatGPT Go, effective from November 4.

A voice assistant for checking balances? Neither company is saying. The announcement is heavy on ambition and light on pixels.

For OpenAI, the math is obvious. India represents a colossal, untapped user base. A deal with a local powerhouse like PhonePe is a faster path to growth than trying to convince people to download another standalone app. For PhonePe, it's a bet that AI can become a utility as common as a QR code, and that it can be the company that provides it.
