India has decided to keep its data at home. The latest move in this effort is a partnership between BharathCloud and real estate firm JLL to build a network of sovereign, AI-ready cloud centers. The plan is to start with at least two facilities in every major metro, then push the infrastructure into smaller cities.
Co-founder Padma Reddy Sama laid out the practical pitch: top security, the ability to scale, and guaranteed compliance with local data laws. The partnership is effectively a large-scale construction project with a specific technical goal. It aims to form what they call a "Digital Triangle," connecting DE-CIX's internet exchange with BharathCloud's secure cloud to make scaling easier for domestic businesses.
Padma Reddy Sama, co-founder of BharathCloud, said in a statement, "We will roll out sovereign, AI-powered cloud centres starting with at least two in every metro and expanding into Tier-II and Tier-III cities while ensuring top-tier security, scalability, operational efficiency, and compliance with India's data sovereignty requirements." Together, the firms aim to establish top-tier edge cloud infrastructure in cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Kolkata and Pune, as well as Tier-II and Tier-III cities such as Vizag, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Kochi, Chandigarh and Bhopal. BharathCloud is advancing India's 5G, IoT and AI-ready cloud infrastructure by strengthening its partnership with JLL to develop cloud centres. This initiative creates a Digital Triangle in India by integrating DE-CIX's interconnection ecosystem with BharathCloud's secure cloud, enabling efficient scaling for businesses and enhancing digital connectivity. Rachit Mohan, APAC lead of data centre colocation leasing at JLL said, "The cloud centre market is experiencing a boost as India's data centre landscape, with capacity set to surge from 1.25 GW in 2025 to an impressive 10.5 GW by 2035--an eightfold increase in just one decade." He added that the growth of AI infrastructure, cloud markets, 5G technology and government digital initiatives is creating significant opportunities.
JLL's Rachit Mohan provided the scale. India's total data center capacity is expected to explode from 1.25 gigawatts in 2025 to 10.5 gigawatts by 2035. That eightfold increase in ten years frames the size of the bet.
The ambition is national, targeting cities from Mumbai and Pune down to Vizag and Bhopal. This is less about revolutionary tech and more about pouring concrete and running fiber to meet a clear regulatory and economic demand. The outcome is a simple shift in geography.
Data produced in India will increasingly stay on servers physically located in India, controlled by Indian companies. It is a logistical response to a political reality.
