Agility Robotics wants its humanoid robot on the same warehouse floor as human workers, no cage required. The Salem, Oregon company unveiled Digit 5 this week, the latest version of a machine it's been selling to logistics operators for years. The pitch this time centers on one change: Digit 5 can work next to people without safety fences, using AI and onboard sensors to detect a person nearby and either stop or move out of the way.

That claim matters because industrial robots have historically been kept behind barriers for a reason. Agility says its previous model, Digit 4, already cleared an independent OSHA safety review on a production line, a first for a humanoid robot. Digit 5 builds on that record while also picking up more strength, faster charging, and swappable grippers for different tasks. Agility is also the first partner to work with Nvidia's Halos safety platform, a system built specifically for robots operating around humans.

Before detailing what Digit 5 can lift, how fast it charges, or where it's headed next, it's worth understanding how the company describes the safety mechanism itself.

Why this matters

The safety-fence removal is the actual milestone here, not the payload bump. Warehouse and factory automation has been bottlenecked less by robot capability than by the cages and clearance zones OSHA and insurers demand around anything that moves with force. If Digit 5's sensor-and-AI detection genuinely holds up under independent review the way Digit 4's did, that changes the calculus for any founder building deployment plans around humanoid labor: floor space, integration cost, and liability all shift.

Nvidia backing this through Halos, with Agility as first partner, also signals where the safety-certification stack for robotics is heading, and who's positioning to own it. For researchers, the open question is whether "stops or steps aside" performs consistently outside curated demos, in cluttered aisles with tired workers moving unpredictably. A 9-minute charge and 22.7 kg lift are nice specs, but the real test is whether OSHA-style reviewers keep signing off as this scales past pilot lines.
