Samsung eyes billion-euro stake in Europe's Mistral AI
Samsung is in talks to put up to one billion euros into Mistral AI, the Financial Times reported, a deal that would value the French startup at around 20 billion euros. That's nearly double the 12 billion euro valuation Mistral carried less than a year ago. Swedish investor EQT is reportedly joining the round alongside Samsung, which already backed Mistral through its venture arm in 2024.
The move fits a pattern. Samsung, one of the world's largest memory chip makers, is also in talks with Anthropic about producing a custom AI chip, and the company has been stacking up stakes across the AI supply chain rather than betting on a single partner. Mistral, meanwhile, is riding its own momentum.
CEO Arthur Mensch said in February he expects annual revenue to cross one billion dollars by year's end, and this week Microsoft expanded its partnership with the startup, pledging billions in compute spending and adding thousands of Nvidia Vera Rubin chips to Mistral's infrastructure. What Samsung wants out of a bigger stake in a European AI lab still isn't fully clear.
Why this matters
For anyone tracking who actually funds European AI, this is the tell. Samsung isn't a passive limited partner here, it's a memory chip giant that needs demand for the silicon underneath every model Mistral trains and every product it ships. A billion euros on top of its 2024 stake, alongside EQT, tells us Samsung wants a seat close to the model layer, not just a supply contract. Pair that with its reported talks with Anthropic, and the pattern is a hardware company hedging its bets across multiple foundation-model bets rather than backing one horse.
For founders in Europe, the lesson is blunter: an 20 billion euro valuation, up from 12 billion less than a year ago, shows strategic corporate capital, not just venture funds, is willing to pay up for scarce European AI talent. For researchers, watch whether Samsung's involvement shapes Mistral's compute access or product roadmap, because chipmakers rarely write checks this size without wanting influence over what gets built next.
