IndiaAI Mission Launches 62 AI and Data Labs Across Uttar Pradesh
India is building AI outposts, 62 concrete rooms full of computers, across its most populous state. This is the physical part of a plan. The IndiaAI Mission signed a deal with the government of Uttar Pradesh to turn a central government idea into a long-term local project. The goal is to make things, train people, and see if any of it actually works outside a conference room.
A major institutional push was also announced under the IndiaAI Mission, which will establish 62 AI and data labs across Uttar Pradesh. These labs are intended to enhance research capacity, support skilling initiatives, and enable real-world deployment of AI applications at the state level. In addition, IndiaAI and the Uttar Pradesh government signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly set up Data and AI Labs, strengthening long-term collaboration between the Centre and the state.
Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada said India is steadily positioning itself as a global provider of AI and digital services, while emphasising the need to address emerging risks, including cybersecurity threats, deepfakes, and gaps in digital literacy. State ministers echoed the view that AI-enabled healthcare could serve as a national pilot model, particularly for population-scale, low-cost innovation. The conference featured discussions on AI-enabled diagnostics, telemedicine, digital health infrastructure and workforce empowerment, drawing on global best practices and Global South priorities.
Working Group sessions also explored frameworks for translating high-level AI principles into implementable policies and examined proposals for Global AI Impact Awards to incentivise responsible and scalable innovation.
They picked healthcare as the first test. The logic is blunt. If you can make an AI diagnostic tool cheap and reliable for over 200 million people in Uttar Pradesh, you can probably sell it to Brazil or Nigeria.
That’s the bet. Minister Prasada talked about India becoming a global AI supplier, but he also listed the incoming problems: deepfakes, hacking, a population still learning how to use a smartphone. The conference discussed awards for responsible innovation.
Working groups are trying to write actual rules. This all sounds familiar, a standard launch playbook. The difference is the scale and the location.
They are not starting in a tech hub. They are starting in a state that is, in many ways, India’s hardest logistical challenge. The labs are built.
Now the real work, the messy and unglamorous kind, begins.
